Leenah Hassan, of Boston, was hiking with friends on the Lonesome Lake trail in Lincoln, New Hampshire, around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23. Hassan stopped along the three-mile loop to take a photo of the lake, slipped on a wet rock, and fell "awkwardly" on her leg, NH Fish and Game Conservation Officers said.

Cell phone service in that area is "spotty," but authorities received a 911 text about the hurt hiker and sent out a rescue crew from the AMC Lonesome Lake Hut to find them.

Because of the significant damage to her leg, Hassan needed to be carried out on a litter. Rescue crews stabilized her injury and began the 1.2-mile trek to get her to the trailhead and a waiting ambulance, fish and game officials said.

Crews accomplished the mission with the help of hiking companions by 6 p.m. and a LinWood Ambulance drove her to Littleton Regional Healthcare for treatment.

New Hampshire Fish and Game officials thanked Hassan's hiking companions for their help and the conservation officers from the Pemi Valley Search and Rescue Team for getting Hassan out quickly to prevent further injury.

They also asked hikers to wear appropriate hiking footwear — such as hiking boots — that provide support, protection, and traction.
